let the (spam wars) begin!!
there is a new impeachment email campaign going around. pls forward widely, and let the spam wars to the 'failed former directors' begin! :D
<< SFSS IMPEACHMENT EMAIL CAMPAIGN
As everyone is well aware, a large portion of the SFU student body recently voted to impeach several directors of the SFSS. Glyn Lewis, Margo Dunnet, Vanessa Kelly, Wei Li, Erica Halpern, and Marion Pollock have all refused to respect the wishes of the students and step down. This has resulted in legal action and SFSS bank accounts being frozen. As mentioned in the "member update" this week in The Peak, until this financial matter is resolved no departmental student unions or clubs will receive funding. Also, as they failed to mention, the Student Society's food services (Higher Grounds, the Highland Pub, The Ladle, and catering) have been comprised because the commercial suppliers of these services are not being paid. This will inevitably result in these operations being shut down and in the layoff of Student Society employees. Plus, possibly no beer on campus.
In their "member update," Margo Dunnet, Glyn Lewis, Wei Li, Vanessa Kelly, Marion Pollock and Erica Halpern state that they are trying to find an "acceptable resolution" to end this situation. They mention that several alternatives have been offered, but say that these alternatives would put staff signing officers in difficult positions that may result in disciplinary action. What exactly are these alternatives? Why would these alternatives result in disciplinary action for SFSS staff? This is ridiculous; it is not the job of the SFSS to protect their staff from disciplinary action; that is the job of the Union. Why would disciplinary action even be an issue? The only reason that comes to mind is retaliatory action from the impeached board members should they be returned to office. I have yet to hear any reasonable explanation why the impeached directors are not relinquishing their signing authority while the matter is being settled in court. If they truly desire to remain in a "caretaker" role, then they should start taking care of the people they are responsible for.
The so-called G7 also stated in their latest "member update" that they will abide by whatever decision the court makes. One has to wonder why they did not abide by the decision of the 1028 students who voted to impeach them. Even if the SGM is deemed to have been invalid, does that invalidate our voices and displeasure with their actions? Do they think that we will not call another meeting and re-impeach them? Based on their actions following the impeachment I find it hard to believe that they will abide by any decision that does not suit their personal needs.
Whatever the courts decide on this matter, one thing is clear, the actions of the impeached members of the student society, and those that support them, since the SGM are clearly negligent. Their actions are not protecting staff; it is putting their livelihoods in jeopardy. Their actions are not in the best interests of students; they are only seeking to save their own skins. In my opinion these negligent actions and inaction are impeachable offences and if the courts do invalidate the SGM, I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that these members are impeached again.
It is time the students speak up again, as it would appear that we were not heard the first time. If you feel the same way, pass this on to your friends, add your name to this letter, and forward it to:

...eating everything in sight since 1981!
i finally got off my lazy ass last week and wrote a long overdue opinion piece to (the peak). ^^ we have the spoof issue coming up, and i can't wait until this gigantic mess blows up in the FFD's faces in 48 hours or less! ;)
for anyone who missed the current edition, here is what came out of several long nights of (drunken debauchery). i am pretty damn proud of it. i hope you'll like it too! :D
<< A HOSTAGE SITUATION
The Simon Fraser Student Society is in a political crisis -- thanks to the shameless arrogance of seven impeached former directors who haven't the slightest clue of what it means to be a student representative. In a letter written last week, Margo Dunnet claims that the impeached former directors only want to act in "the Society's best interest". She also claims that the goal of the "contested Board of Directors" is to "ensure that SFU students are impacted by this current dispute as little as possible, and that Student Society services continue in their normal fashion".
I have one thing to say to Margo Dunnet -- this is total bullshit. There is only one way for the Student Society to unfreeze its bank accounts, and that is for the impeached signing officers to relinquish their signing authority until they get an official ruling from the courts (which is at least a number of weeks away). This is the only responsible and appropriate action to take. But for all their recent rhetoric, Vanessa Kelly, Wei Li, and Glyn Lewis have consistently and repeatedly refused to surrender their signing authority -- even on a temporary basis that will not impact the pending court battle. In the incident that prompted me to write this letter, I watched as Margo Dunnet, Vanessa Kelly, and Wei Li rushed out of a University-level meeting early, presumably to avoid an inevitable confrontation about the banking situation with University Relations Officer Andrea Sandau. And despite his "resignation" in the campus press nearly two weeks ago, Shawn Hunsdale has not given up his signing authority at the bank.
The impeached directors are holding the Student Society hostage -- while cleverly deflecting the blame using the resources that they should no longer have access to as impeached directors. They alone deserve the ire of every staff member who have had their pay cheques affected, and every student who desperately awaits the funding that they are entitled to from their club, department student union, or constituency group.
One of the most offensive things about the recent actions of the impeached directors is their continual attempts to discount the eight remaining directors of the Student Society. These directors are not contested, and are continuing to work for the students that they were elected to represent. Andrea Sandau, Joel Blok, Heather Ball, Melody Li, Ivy So, Caitlin Hawkes-Frost, Ben Milne, and Augustin Cerani are the real remaining directors of the Society. I would call on the seven impeached former directors to truly act in the best interests of students -- to accept the will of students that was so clearly expressed at the Special General Meeting, to stop holding the staff and student groups within the SFSS hostage by clinging onto their signing privileges, and to allow the only directors that have stood up for student interests at the University to begin the massive undertaking of rebuilding a Student Society that will respect the wishes of the engaged student body.

(your student society): burning witches at the stake since 2006!
a bunch of you may have been by the (sfss) offices in the past several days, and wondered what was going on. i'm unfortunately no longer in the loop, but here's a message from a number of concerned students that is going out all over campus. if you too are worried about the secret state of your student society, i encourage you to contact your elected representatives today!
<< Last Wednesday, seven Simon Fraser Student Society employees were sent home on paid leave with no explanation. Their office locks were changed, email passwords were changed, and their computers removed.
These staff people work for YOUR Graduate Health Plan. They process YOUR cheques like SFSS reimbursements, Forum and Graduate Issues Committee stipends, and student employee payroll. They coordinate YOUR Caucus and grants, assist with Graduate Issues and University Relations, and more.
Every day that they stay home, it costs $1300 in wages, and none of these services happen.
Should not these employees know why they've been sent home? Should not we students know why our services have been suspended?
Ask the Simon Fraser Student Society President, Shawn Hunsdale at pres@sfss.ca AND the Graduate Issues Officer at gio@sfss.ca why these employees are still waiting to come back to work. >>
you can also share any inconveniences you may have experienced at the student society, by emailing the (peak) opinions editor at opinions@mail.peak.sfu.ca! o.O

i'm sure i'll sign my life away to new commitments soon enough. but for now, it's (b33r)-drinking, partyin'-on-the-beach, and chasing after things that i may or may not want (and should really never be allowed to have). if gas was less expensive, i'll wander off on another spontaneous road trip. i might do it anyways. who knows? if u call next week, i might be off in (san jose). :D
oh and (wimpy) is back on (friday)!! and definitely less (wimpy). infact, we might need to find her a new (tag)! maybe we can call (her) shorty. :P
this weekend was spent at the (cjsf) retreat. it was fun. i probably don't need that much insight into the station, but it's an interesting look at a organization minus external politics. and j2o is definitely crazy!! the tour she got us (at 12am on a sunday morning!) of the FM transmission tower was pretty fuckin' awesome!
i should post some (fas formal) pics. and keep working on my hi.ball report. clearly i'll do neither. i'm working on my sunburn!
