<< A HOSTAGE SITUATION
The Simon Fraser Student Society is in a political crisis -- thanks to the shameless arrogance of seven impeached former directors who haven't the slightest clue of what it means to be a student representative. In a letter written last week, Margo Dunnet claims that the impeached former directors only want to act in "the Society's best interest". She also claims that the goal of the "contested Board of Directors" is to "ensure that SFU students are impacted by this current dispute as little as possible, and that Student Society services continue in their normal fashion".
I have one thing to say to Margo Dunnet -- this is total bullshit. There is only one way for the Student Society to unfreeze its bank accounts, and that is for the impeached signing officers to relinquish their signing authority until they get an official ruling from the courts (which is at least a number of weeks away). This is the only responsible and appropriate action to take. But for all their recent rhetoric, Vanessa Kelly, Wei Li, and Glyn Lewis have consistently and repeatedly refused to surrender their signing authority -- even on a temporary basis that will not impact the pending court battle. In the incident that prompted me to write this letter, I watched as Margo Dunnet, Vanessa Kelly, and Wei Li rushed out of a University-level meeting early, presumably to avoid an inevitable confrontation about the banking situation with University Relations Officer Andrea Sandau. And despite his "resignation" in the campus press nearly two weeks ago, Shawn Hunsdale has not given up his signing authority at the bank.
The impeached directors are holding the Student Society hostage -- while cleverly deflecting the blame using the resources that they should no longer have access to as impeached directors. They alone deserve the ire of every staff member who have had their pay cheques affected, and every student who desperately awaits the funding that they are entitled to from their club, department student union, or constituency group.
One of the most offensive things about the recent actions of the impeached directors is their continual attempts to discount the eight remaining directors of the Student Society. These directors are not contested, and are continuing to work for the students that they were elected to represent. Andrea Sandau, Joel Blok, Heather Ball, Melody Li, Ivy So, Caitlin Hawkes-Frost, Ben Milne, and Augustin Cerani are the real remaining directors of the Society. I would call on the seven impeached former directors to truly act in the best interests of students -- to accept the will of students that was so clearly expressed at the Special General Meeting, to stop holding the staff and student groups within the SFSS hostage by clinging onto their signing privileges, and to allow the only directors that have stood up for student interests at the University to begin the massive undertaking of rebuilding a Student Society that will respect the wishes of the engaged student body.
